Why Book Reviewers Love WinePress Titles
We received this e-mail from Mary, a blogger who often reviews books published by WinePress.
While posting a recommendation on Marysworld for the book Noah (Pleasant Word), I realized why I enjoy reviewing for WinePress so much. In the write-up for Noah, WinePress has written, “Noah is permeated with biblical truth.”
Not only do I review pre- and post-print books, I also edit Christian manuscripts for authors/potential authors on a freelance basis. The type of editing I do is strictly content as it relates to developing characters and the plot to bring out central Christian/Biblical truths. My mantra and personal endeavor is to bring the face of spiritual truths to fictional characters.
Christian fiction has to be more than just entertainment or religious sensationalism and it really bothers me to see some manuscripts make it to print that, in the end, did nothing to promote change or encourage a deeper relationship with God. It has nothing to do with doctrine and everything to do with showing and not only telling what the love of God really is and can do. Christian fiction is a great vehicle for representing these truths.
WinePress is an authority on this. Your books have such depth and upon finishing them, the reader knows they have been presented with a challenge to dig deeper and become a better person. Your authors know how to integrate central truths and those things that are eternal without being preachy.
Not only Noah, but all of your books are “permeated with biblical truth.” Working with many (Christian) publishers and authors over the last few years has taught me that the word Christian holds little meaning in some circles and it’s refreshing to see a publisher not compromise, but stand firm in its ethics by refusing to lower their standards.
You are the epitome of a Christian publisher and I really appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given to have a part in representing and promoting your authors.

The Captain’s Job: A Titanic One
“Iceberg ahead!”
You can probably imagine the scene, especially if you’ve watched the movie Titanic. In such a situation, when wisdom, action, and decisiveness are vital to avert impending disaster, the captain is the most important individual on the ship. It is to his leadership and experience that the crew and passengers turn their thoughts.
Naturally, you would want to know that he is aware of the danger, has the situation under control, and is taking the necessary steps to ensure that you don’t end up in Davy Jones’ locker.
Many times, when people encounter a problem, they think that the best way to solve it is to go “straight to the top.” When they hear the cry of, “iceberg ahead,” they go directly to the captain to tell him what the problem is and—in some cases—what they think he should do about it.
Imagine the chaos that would result if everyone on the ship did this at the same time.
In reality, the passengers’ best course of action is to stay calm, follow the procedures, and communicate with the appropriate crew members. What’s required is trust and co-operation. The passengers’ trust allows the captain to do his job, and their co-operation gives everyone the chance of surviving comfortably.
The same principles hold true at WinePress. Our “captain” has the title Executive Publisher, but in most ways his responsibilities and position are the same as a ship’s captain.
As your project journeys to its final destination, you can be assured that your captain has his crew (that’s us) well organized and he has the welfare of his passengers (that’s you) uppermost in mind. It’s my privilege to work with him as Executive Officer and, believe me, if there’s even a small piece of ice ahead, he’s going to be aware of it. In fact, he’s probably already taking action to deal with potential problems that nobody else is even thinking of.
So, when you get that sinking feeling, don’t worry. This is not the Titanic. Resist the urge to burst into the control room and demand the captain’s attention. Rest assured that he’s doing his job and won’t let your project end up like Leonardo DiCaprio.
Malcolm Fraser is the Executive Officer at WinePress Group, and serves as the assistant to the Executive Publisher. He helps to oversee and coordinate all of WinePress’ different departments, handles customer service issues, contract development, and also contributes to programming and designing our websites and author blogs.

We enjoy receiving feedback from our authors and sometimes it comes in unexpected ways. Lee Rankin, husband of author Margaret Rankin, e-mailed us to let us know he received an invoice from us and just a little bit more:
Dear WinePress,
Please charge the Annual In-Print Fee using the credit card on file. We feel very privileged to be associated with Wine Press Publishing Group.
Many thanks.
Lee Rankin for Margaret
More about Margaret’s book, Making Sense of Evil:
Peg and Lee Rankin stood on their New Jersey balcony on September 11, 2001 with binoculars and watched the first plane hit the twin towers. The same day they learned two members of their church died in United Flight 93. This caused questions in Peg’s mind about this evil and she was determined to find answers. Her new book, Making Sense of Evil: 9/11 Eyewitness Finds Answers (2006, WinePress Publishing) is the result of her search.
Five years later, as September 11th 2006 approaches, the country is still filled with horror and questions. Everything from movies about survivors, recent arrests in thwarted terrorist plots, and the public release of haunting 911 calls, shows Americans’ desperation for answers. Rankin speaks to this desperation in a surprisingly positive study of the Bible about evil Rankin states in her book: “…when a tragedy like 9/11 occurs, your mind can drive you crazy… The Bible comes to our aid at times like these, reassuring us that there are no ‘what ifs’ or ‘if onlys’ with God. Whatever happens is part of an ultimate plan. While some people find such a conclusion disturbing, I find it wonderfully liberating. In fact, it is the only thing that sets one free from the bondage of the destructive ‘what-could-have-been’s.”
Rankin explains that just as Jesus’ suffering on the cross produced life for all mankind, when we trust God to work His will, we too can stand amazed at the plans He works in spite of the evil among us.
Author of six books, including the best-selling Yet Will I Trust Him (1998, Regal Books), Rankin’s passion is to take deep spiritual truths and make them as easy-to-understand as possible. She has been featured on numerous television and radio shows as an encourager and to speak of her experiences of that fateful day.

Lois Johnson, with Cheryl Courtney Semick, recently published her new book Gary’s Rock and Cheryl had some comments about it:
We ABSOLUTELY LOVE our Gary’s Rock book from Pleasant Word!!!! Everyone is so thrilled and excited about it and says it looks so professional, they would’ve never guessed it was self-published! I am so pumped I can’t wait to see my own in print!
About the book:
Sudden death ambushes unsuspecting souls, leaving gaping holes and unanswerable questions. Gary’s mom, Lois Johnson, faced such news on June 9, 1976, when her fifteen-year-old son drowned just a block from their home in Lake Santa Fe, Metamora, Illinois.
Such tragedies happen every second, yet few end in the joy that the Johnsons found by trusting in God’s master plan for their lives. Are you ready for sudden death? How will you handle the instant loss of your schoolmates, parents, children, or neighbors? Do you know where you’re going if your life were to end today? Gary’s Rock will help you find answers to these questions and more.
To order your copy of Gary’s Rock, please visit our Pleasant Word online bookstore.
