New England Book Festival Honors Pleasant Word Author

The 2009 New England Book Festival awarded wHispers (when He is so precious even rocks sing), by Shirley Pieters Vogel, second place in the Spiritual division.

Awards for all categories were presented January 16 at the Omni Parker House in Boston, the grand literary hotel where writers like Thoreau, Emerson and Longfellow met at the legendary Saturday club for poetry readings and high-minded discussions.

In wHispers, you’ll discover how God cares for each of His children in the midst of life’s challenges and crises, and learn to trust those quiet whispers… from God’s heart to yours.

Shirley Vogel’s story is that of a spiritual pilgrimage. In her ability to find God’s work in the smallest things, her book is reminiscent of Brother Lawrence’s The Practice of the Presence of God. There are many mileposts along the way, some related to tragedy and crisis, some to victory and empowerment. At each point she shares her reflections and opportunities for her own personal growth. Through it all, Shirley’s radiant personality and faith shine through.

—Dr. Catherine Clark Kroeger, faculty member, Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, author and/or editor of eight books, including the IVP Women’s Bible Commentary.
